Custom sets are a favorite of mine to create, and can take quite a bit of time to find the proper materials…
Traditionally we would use fire to burn out the inside of our drums, they were carved from many different kinds of trees. Now I utilize charcoal and some more modern tools to create end grain carved water drums and laminated drums.
Mainly I produce two types of drums, one being the more modern contemporary version as seen in the photo,(Maple Laminated) these drums are made from kiln dried lumber. I use various tools from saws, hatchets, draw knifes and files to hand carve my drums. Utilizing the laminate process makes it quick to put the drum together but carving is extremely rough on the hands and takes quite a bit of time to finish.
